About the Public Art Futures Lab Artist Residencies: The Public Art Futures Lab Artist Residency supports artists and artist teams working at the intersection of art, technology, and public space. Designed as a platform for experimentation, research, and public-facing activation, the residency provides time, resources, and technical support for artists to explore how emerging tools, such as projection, augmented reality, media-based systems, and interactive technologies, can shape shared civic experiences. Artists with exploring technology are encouraged to propose site-responsive projects that engage public audiences, reflect the communities they serve, and expand how art functions within contemporary urban environments.
Eligibility Requirements for Artist Residencies:
- Open to all artists across various disciplines
- Must live or work in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area (including Fulton, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale counties)
- Artists outside the Atlanta Metropolitan Area with a strong connection to Atlanta are also encouraged to apply
Application Guidelines:
- Applications to be completed via this Submittable form
- Responses to the Residency Briefs can also be submitted in writing or as a video recording (maximum of five minutes)
- Deadline for applications: Midnight, EST February 10, 2026

- January 6, 2026: Open applications for the Public Art Futures Lab AiR Program with residencies supported by ATL DTN (Atlanta Downtown) and MARTA Artbound
- January 13, 2026: Virtual Information Session - 11am - 1pm, Meeting Link Here
- February 10, 2026: AiR Program application deadline by Midnight, EST
- February 11 - March 9, 2026: Jurors Evaluate and Score Applications Selecting Finalists

ATL DTN - Projection Based Residency
Exploration of a projection mapping project for Atlanta Downtown's MAP Rover project. Traveling around Downtown Atlanta, the MAP Rover is outfitted with a high-lumen projector and workstation that illuminates city buildings and unexpected places with a digital artwork, film, and photography.
ATL DTN - Augmented Reality Based Residency
Project that explores augmented reality for an interactive public art project. The selected artists will have the opportunity to be one of the first projects featured in ATL DTN soon-to-be-launched augmented reality program.
MARTA Artbound’s Art-in-Transit Residency This residency asks a central question: Can creativity and shared culture be treated as essential parts of public infrastructure, rather than as decoration added afterward? Artists are invited to explore how art and culture can live naturally within public transit spaces and support everyday civic life. This residency is well suited to artists working with experimental, media-based, sound, light, projection or digital work.
Residency Sessions Dates:
Please note, these dates outline the amount of time allotted for Public Art Futures Lab artist studio space usage - there are weeks where multiple artists will be sharing the space. Final projects may be scheduled outside these dates and will be agreed upon with selected artist and Residency Partners.
- ATL DTN Residency: Week of April 20 – August 21
- ATL DTN Residency: Week of July 27 – November 27
- MARTA Artbound Residency: Week of November 2 – March 5
